Captain Charles Elwood, the great atmospheric pilot, has been chosen to lead the first expedition through “The Void” surrounding Earth to begin to reach the first of the other 9 primary and 181 secondary known worlds that the “Magisterium” claim are all inhabited by unique creatures and strange civilizations. Since “Chuck” is the best of the new “Void” pilots and a national hero, he is an excellent choice. Looking to explore and expand with the possibility of new resources and new “friends,” the expedition becomes nationally supported by most. As some factions would rather exploit and exterminate, others would prefer the safety of isolation or the noninterference of a “higher” morality, the expedition is full of open and hidden agendas which the strong personality of Captain Yeager must balance and control.
