Favorite
Tales
This is a one-of-a-kind collection of short stories by John Dalmas
that he has selected as his personal favorites. All the stories have
been previously published in Analog, Fantasy & Science Fiction,
Pulphouse, The Saint Magazine, and in several anthologies. For this
edition, Dalmas has prefaced each story with amusing tales of how they
were conceived and developed, and how they got published, giving insight
into how a prolific and respected author of science fiction approaches
the job of writing.

Dedication
This book is dedicated to Frank Kelly Freas, the dean of science fiction illustrators, and to the memory of Jack Gaughan, another memorable illustrator. To Jim Burk, who urged me to collect these stories for book publication. Jim's first novel, High Rage, will soon be published by Silver Dragon Books.
To the memory of Jon Gustafson, writer, artist, and godfather of science-fiction fandom in the Inland Empire of the Northwest, constant support to artists and writers, and personal friend for twenty-two years.
And, to Jimmy McClain, fireman-oiler-watertender, who helped me grow up right.
—John Dalmas
